Ueno Sakura Festival 2019 – Experience Hanami in Tokyo!

Are you coming to Japan in spring? Then, here is one thing you don’t want to miss – Ueno Sakura Festival. In Japan, you can enjoy various events in each season. Among them, spring is the best season to visit especially if you love flowers and nature! From late March to mid-April, cherry blossoms bloom through the Japanese archipelago.  You will experience hanami everywhere. (hanami is an activity when people gather under the cherry blossoms trees with food and drinks to enjoy spring with their company.) In this article, I will introduce a famous hanami spot in Ueno, Tokyo and a Sakura festival.

Hanami in Ueno Onshi Park

Ueno is one of the famous sightseeing spots for travelers, and Ueno Onshi Park is a mecca for hanami in Tokyo. One remarkable point about this park is not in its size or location, but the fact that this is the first park in Japan to be assigned as a park in 1873. There are about 800 cherry trees with 50 different kinds of cherry blossoms. Besides, about 2 million people visit the park for hanami during Sakura festival. I suggest you see lightened up cherry blossoms when you visit Onshi park at night. Over 800 paper lanterns will be turned on from 5:30 pm to 8 pm during the blooming season.

Things You Can’t Do at Hanami

Troubles can easily happen at a crowded public place, especially with alcohol. To avoid getting into troubles or causing one, being polite and keeping good manners is what you must remember to enjoy hanami. Please check the suggestion list below!

No shaking or breaking the cherry blossoms trees

– they can get sick and no flowers will bloom the year after. In the worst case, the damaged tree can wither.

No fire or smoking

– you don’t want to risk burning stuff in such a crowded place

No throwing away garbage

– a big amount of garbage is not supposed to be thrown away at any park. Bring back your trash.

No making too much noise

– many people are drunk and may be too loud, but you better remember there are children and elders there too.

Details and Access

Dates: March 21st – April 7th , 2019 (estimated). The best timing to see the cherry blossoms there is usually from late March to the beginning of April. There are only a few days to see the full bloom. However, the timing can change depending on the climate each year.
