Most Popular Hokkaido Spring Events and Festivals 2019
When you think of Japanese culture, one of the main highlights would definitely be the blooming cherry flowers in spring. Goryokaku Cherry Blossoms are one of the best in northern Japan. Because there are so many spots to see the beautiful view, you might be wondering which one to go to. In this article, I am going to introduce one of the best spots to see the Japanese cherry blossoms in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
Goryokaku, is a place where a Japanese castle was built by the Edo Shogunate in the Edo period in Hakodate, Hokkaido prefecture. Today the ruins of the castle remain and the place is known as the “Goryokaku Park”. The most significant characteristic of this place is the star-shaped surroundings of the castle, which was aimed to keep enemies away. Today the place is famous as one of the best spots to see cherry blossoms as you can see the star-shaped park colored completely in pink. Goryokaku Cherry Blossoms are exceptionally beautiful and this place is something you shouldn’t miss when you are in Hokkaido.
Every year, throughout the end of April to the beginning of May, the whole park gets covered in pink with 1600 blooming cherry trees. The view is so magical and breathtaking, just walking through the park will give you a wonderful time. You can also climb the Goryokaku tower right next to the park, to see the view from above, which looks like a pink star with the blossoms.
When you get hungry, I would recommend the Japanese style mutton barbeque – “Genghis Khan”, which you can find in some parts of the park. What more is there to enjoy than good food with a magnificent view?
After a nice day with cherry blossoms, why not come again at night for a little night walk? The park gets lit up at night, creating a completely different but wondrous atmosphere.
Dates (blooming season): end of April – beginning of May annually. Please check the official website to get updated information.
