Hachioji Festival is held  every year, on the first weekend of August.  Roughly 700,000 – 800,000 people visit to enjoy this festival . It is known as one of the best “ Floats Festival” in Japan. Every float (called “Dashi” in Japanese) is made by different types of sculpture. So, they are never same. It has beautiful sculptural decorations such as flowers and dragons on the floats. Furthermore, they are gorgeously  lit up at night to show us another face unlike at the daytime and sometimes when the float moves, many small pieces of paper are dancing around it to make a nice show.

Details of “Dashi”

Dashi has been with us for about 300 years already as a kind of heritage. At the World War Ⅱ in 1945, Hachioji was attacked with air strikes. As a result, some of Dashi were destroyed by fire. However local people restored Dashi step by step. Currently there are 19 floats.

Dashi Compete With Each Other

On the festival days, floats go around main streets in Hachioji. Once Dashis bump into each other on the same street, then a Dashi battle starts. They show what they want to tell everyone like heritage, old good age and something we have to hold with us by playing traditional musical instruments, singing the songs and dancing beautifully. When you are attracted by the other party, the battle is over. That’s one of the most famous scenes of this festival and you shouldn`t miss it!

Hachioji Festival Got a Guinness World Record!

The day was ridiculesly hot in August 2016 during Hachiouji Festival. 2130 people who love Hachioji lined up straight for about 1.2 mile  and did “Bon Dance” for 5 minutes all together. It was actually quite a tough challenge. They had to make huge efforts for it because there are couple of rules you have to do to grab the record. For instance:✦ Everyone must keep dancing  more than 5 minutes under the blazing sun.✦ Everyone must dance with exactly same choreography.✦ Everyone has to wear Yukata and Geta.✦ More than 95 % of the  all participants must finish dancing without any mistakes. Those people worked on it several times before and finally, they broke the previous Guinness World Record of 2025 people in Dotonbori, Osaka. You can watch the “Bon Dance” every year even though there might not be as many people as at the time of Guinness record, but it is still absolutely amazing performance for sure!
