What is Sawara Summer Festival?:

Sawara Summer Festival takes place at Yasaka Temple in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. In this summer festival, we can enjoy seeing some festival cars, we Japanese call it ‘Dashi’, decorated with big dolls.
Dashi is carried around the Yasaka Temple by people playing a traditional song, ‘Sawara Bayashi’. Besides this, Japanese traditional arts are exhibited. We can enjoy these arts and buy them. Like this, Sawara Summer Festival has fantastic points to visit and we can feel Japanese tradition with ‘Dashi’ and ‘Sawara Bayashi’.

The History of Sawara Summer Festival:

Yasaka Temple, where Sawara Summer Festival is held, was built in the 14th century. At that time, Yasaka Temple was called ‘Tennou Sha’. Long time ago, people often held “Gion Festival” in many areas to avoid prevailing pandemic. In 1721, people around Tennou Sha imitated Gion Festival and started to hold their own festival. This was the original of Sawara Summer Festival. In the later Edo period, they began to use Dashi in the festival and it goes on until now.


Details and How to Access:

This year, Sawara Summer Festival will be held from July 13th to 15th. We can get to Yasaka Temple on foot from Sawara Station. We can get on JR Narita Line to go to Sawara Station. In addition, we can also use a special train during the festival term, on 14th and 15th. Express buses are available from Tokyo Station or Hamamatsu Station. There are parking lots around the temple so we can get there by a car.
