Early in May, wisteria gets in full bloom in Kameido Tenjin in Tokyo. Thus, the Wisteria Festival takes place in the shrine. It goes without saying that it is the best place where you can see beautiful wisteria in Tokyo. The highlight of the festival is the number of wisteria plants. There, you will see many wisterias in full bloom and feel as if you are surrounded by a fresh purple cloud. In this article, I am going to introduce you to the Wisteria Festival in Kameido Tenjin and how to enjoy it comfortably.
Kameido Tenjin is one of the old shrines in Tokyo. It was built about 400 years ago and made in imitation of famous shrine named “Dazaifu”. People say that the God of studies has lived there for a long time. So, every year, many students go to this shrine with the hope that they will pass the exams. Another interesting fact is that to express the feeling of gratitude, some of the students who passed the exams, bring and release a turtle there because “kame” means turtle in English.
Wisteria has purple flowers. Its Japanese name is “Fuji” resembling the purple color in Japanese. It usually blooms between the middle of April and early May. However, the blooming period depends on weather conditions. So, you should check the weather before you go to the festival. In addition, it is a rare flower which grows towards the ground. Thanks to its characteristics, it looks like a curtain. You can enjoy walking wrapped in the purple curtain.
Kameido Tenjin is a famous photo spot. Many people take photos and post them on SNS every year during the festival. In the past, famous painters drew its landscape. So, let me introduce you to some photo spots. First, you should take a photo on the bridge – “Taiko Bashi”. You will capture the view of beautiful wisterias from above, which exaggerates the size of the purple curtain. Second, you should take a photo including wisterias and the bridge. It imitates the famous old painting. In Tokyo, you can rarely take a photo which is full of nature. Third, you should take a photo at night. Nearby the shrine, “Tokyo Skytree” is illuminated colorfully during the night. On the contrary, wisteria features soft color. So, wisteria looks more beautiful against the “Skytree”.
